Diversity - Community Outreach
Baptist Health Care affiliates participated in health expos and fairs throughout the reporting period in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, as well as in nearby South Alabama. Participation ranged from setting up a single booth to providing information and/or free medical screenings to hosting the entire event. Examples of the types of events supported include:

• Summer Safety including the Three Flags for Life surf warning flag system for Santa Rosa and Escambia county beaches, and PoolSafe and BeachSafe coloring books to educate pool owners and beach-goers on ways to prevent drownings
• Coronary risk profiles and early heart attack care presentations
• Change of Heart



Family Expo 2005 Attendance at the 13th annual Family Expo was approximately 6,000. Baptist provided: 164 stroke risk assessments of which 116 were for women and 48 for men 178 glucose tests 144 osteoporosis heel scans 100 sleep disorder tests with two referrals back 100 body composition screenings 50 speech screenings for children ages three to five.


DNA kits were distributed to 200 children by Trinity DNA solutions. Volunteers conducted a bicycle rodeo and distributed 100 free helmets. The junior surgeon booth was visited by 500 children . A balloon artist, karate demonstrations, the Pensacola Opera and Heartbeat International characters--who encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle -- provided plenty of entertainment for the whole family. In addition, the public was encouraged to bring in coats, sweaters, sports equipment and canned food for various local non-profit agencies. Service Accomplishments: There were 60 vendors in addition to those sponsored by Baptist Health Care. The total expense for presenting the event was $32,203. Cost breakdown is 1,192 volunteer hours at an average cost of $18.04 per hour equaling $14,304. The cost of the program includes supplies, advertising and direct expenses covered by sponsorships and booth rentals. Costs covered by BHC Community Relations totaled $9,402 for newspaper inserts and flyers.


Senior Expo 2005 Service Accomplishments: Senior Expo 2005 was attended by more than 3,000 people and showcased 48 vendor booths including those from Baptist Health Care and other organizations throughout the area. Baptist Health Care offered information on healthcare services, conducted 167 cardiac risk assessments and 62 osteoporosis heel scans. Senior Expo is the highlight of a week-long celebration promoted under the title Pensacola Loves Seniors. The cost of the program was $18,851.68 ( + Staff hours cost) Cost breakdown is 750 staff hours at an average cost of $18.04 an hour equaling $13,530. This includes employees and community volunteers. The cost of the program also includes supplies and direct expenses which are partially covered by sponsorships and booth rentals.
